Venus in the second house of a composite chart indicates a love of beautiful things and a desire to have them as personal possessions. Robert Hand reads it as a statement about what the two people value together, and beauty is high on that list.
Where a couple owns property together, this shows up straightforwardly as a taste for beautiful or artistic objects. Where they do not, the emphasis on the value of beautiful things is still there.
What This Placement Describes
Venus in a composite chart rules love and the ability to form relationships based on emotion. Hand describes its deepest meaning as the principle that draws two entities together by natural and spontaneous inner forces, with no external compulsion needed. The house position shows how far the relationship allows both people to express themselves through love, and which part of their surroundings they most want to bring into the experience.
The second house of a composite chart refers to values, meaning what the two people value and their relationship to what is valued. Hand says this operates on two planes. The first is the role that value systems play in forming the relationship, the extent to which two people come together because they value similar things or ideas. The second, clearly related to the first, is whatever finances and property exist between them. He notes that not all relationships involve common property, in which case only the first meaning applies.
How It Tends To Play Out
With Venus here, the values in question are aesthetic ones. Hand says the two think about the beautiful and place a high value on beauty and art, and that Venus also emphasises comfort. As a couple they will like surroundings that are soft, comfortable and warm as well as beautiful. That is a specific and rather domestic picture, and it holds whether or not there is shared property.
He then makes a plainer material claim. In any kind of relationship, Venus in the second house is a good indication that the two will have these things as well as the money to pay for them. He calls it a possible indication of wealth, or at the very least of having whatever they need. It is one of the few places in the book where he says outright that a placement points at resources being adequate.
For a business or professional relationship he reads the same signal as financial success, and he names the fields where it works best: those related to entertainment, art, or pleasure and beauty.
The Opposite House
The paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, increasing as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a second house Venus should also be read through the eighth, and where the two natal Venus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential.
The eighth house is joint resources, and Hand says the second and eighth are hard to separate in a composite because you cannot tell the partners apart. He urges the reader to consult both for anything financial. The eighth carries its own distinct meaning too, as the house of major transformations, the passing away of an old order and the building of a new one. His reading of Venus there describes love with an intensity often absent elsewhere, and a regenerative quality. Read as an axis, the second is what the two value and hold, and the eighth is what value costs them and changes in them.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending them. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches no explicit caution to Venus in the second, which is worth stating rather than covering with an invented one. The pressure points come from the house.
He says that where the second house carries difficult aspects, disagreements over values may be a major source of conflict, and that trouble with property and finance can follow either from a couple being unable to agree what to do with money or from neither person having much idea what to do with it. In that case, he says, look at the individual birth charts.
There is also a quieter issue in the placement itself. When beauty and comfort are what a relationship values, the surroundings can start to carry more of the relationship than they should, and taste can stand in for the harder conversation about what the two people actually want.
The house sets the issue. Whether the shared values sit easily or under strain is described by the aspects to Venus, which is a separate question.
