Venus in the eleventh house of a composite chart is one of the best placements for an intimate personal relationship. Robert Hand says so plainly, and he closes the delineation by calling it one of the best signs for a balanced and harmonious relationship of any kind.
The eleventh is the house of friendship, and at the very least Venus here will help the two people be friends. But he is careful that the reading not be reduced to that. The emotional depth of this relationship is not limited to friendship, and the position can also be a sign of a deep love affair.
What This Placement Describes
Venus in a composite chart rules love and the ability to form relationships based on emotion. Hand describes its deepest meaning as the principle that draws two entities together by natural and spontaneous inner forces, no external compulsion required, and its house position as showing how far the relationship lets both people express themselves through love.
The composite eleventh house is the house of friendship, and Hand says a strong one is very appropriate in a composite chart. It does not limit a relationship to friendship. It helps two people be friendly in whatever they are doing together, which he calls especially important in a sexual relationship, since lovers with a strong eleventh house will also be friends. He rates it an excellent house for a marriage composite.
It is also the house of hopes and wishes, so a good eleventh house gives a relationship a strong sense of shared ideals, with both people looking for the same things in life. His general condition on the house is firm: a couple with a strong eleventh must be able to share a great deal of their lives with each other, or the relationship is not likely to be a very successful one.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand makes an explicit comparison here, one of the few places in the chapter where he sets two placements side by side. In some ways an eleventh house Venus is better than a fifth house one, because along with being in love the two also love each other. They have a strong abiding affection alongside the well known and often short lived feeling of intoxication.
On the hopes and wishes side, he says Venus here is a good indication that the two have harmonious ideals, and he draws a practical consequence: because they are both seeking the same things, being together helps them find them.
He also describes how the relationship is likely to feel from inside when both people are reasonably realistic about themselves. They will experience it as something beautiful and ideal, because the experience is based on truth.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So an eleventh house Venus should also be read through the fifth, and where the two natal Venus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The fifth house is love affairs, self expression and creativity, and Hand says it signifies the extent to which the relationship lets both people be themselves in the most genuine and honest way possible. His reading of Venus there describes a light hearted, pleasure loving bond between two people who enjoy being together and make each other feel good. Read as an axis, the fifth is the enjoyment and the eleventh is the friendship and the shared ideal that outlast it.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand names one risk, and it is proportionate to the placement rather than dramatic. The eleventh house Venus can mean that the two idealise either the feeling of love or the relationship itself, which he says can be a problem if either person is prone to unrealistic attitudes about feelings.
The condition he attaches is the useful part. If both are reasonably realistic about themselves, the ideal holds because it is based on truth. Where they are not, the ideal is a picture, and a picture eventually has to be compared with the thing.
His general remarks on the house add a second pressure point. Difficult aspects here, especially those of Saturn, may bring about conflicts of ideals, or friendship may be denied, limiting the relationship to a purely professional one or a purely sexual one without friendship. Since friendship is what this placement is chiefly good for, losing it costs more here than it would elsewhere.
The house sets the issue. Whether the shared ideals hold together or pull apart is described by the aspects to Venus, which is a separate question.
