Venus in the fifth house of a composite chart is one of the stronger indications that this will be a relationship of love, or at the very least of friendship. Robert Hand puts it near the front of the list for a reason: the fifth is the house of love affairs, self expression and children, and Venus is the planet of love, affection and beauty, so the two have a natural affinity.
What it denotes is a relationship between two people who really enjoy being together and who make each other feel good.
What This Placement Describes
Venus in a composite chart rules love and the ability to form relationships based on emotion. Hand describes its deepest meaning as the principle that draws two entities together by natural and spontaneous inner forces, no external compulsion needed, and he attaches a condition: that pull works only where both people have defined themselves as individuals. You have to be yourself in order to love someone else.
That condition is exactly what the fifth house is about. Hand says the composite fifth house represents, first of all, the extent to which the relationship provides a setting for the individuals to be themselves in the most genuine and honest way possible. He notes how many relationships survive only because each partner puts up a false front, trying to be what the other seems to want, and how such a relationship must collapse when the truth becomes known. The fifth signifies the ability to be real in each other's presence, and he adds that being real should not be an effort.
He also says what kind of relationship a strong fifth house makes. The two are not together to form a team or a partnership but because they enjoy being themselves in each other's company.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand describes a shared appetite for pleasure. The two will love going out and doing things together, especially attending amusements, theatre and other entertainment. He calls the fifth house Venus a light hearted position, and he means that as a description rather than a criticism.
His summary is generous and conditional in the same sentence. If the couple can get past the one flaw he names, a fifth house Venus guarantees that this will be a pleasant and loving relationship for both of them.
Where there are children, he says the two will love them very much and will develop a warm relationship with them.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a fifth house Venus should also be read through the eleventh, and where the two natal Venus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The eleventh is the house of friendship and of shared hopes and ideals. Hand rates Venus there as one of the best placements for an intimate personal relationship, and he draws the comparison himself: in some ways it is better than a fifth house Venus, because along with being in love the two also love each other, a strong abiding affection alongside the well known and often short lived feeling of intoxication. Read as an axis, the fifth is the enjoyment and the eleventh is the friendship and the shared ideal underneath it. He also notes that the fifth and eleventh both rule friendship.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand names one flaw and calls it the only real one, adding that it is not too difficult to overcome. The fifth house Venus does not provide the energy needed for a long term, serious day to day relationship such as marriage.
He spells out what that looks like. With this position the two may be reluctant to face the difficult and sometimes unpleasant work of building up a stable relationship, which is not as much fun as the good times they enjoy together. The pleasure is real and it is not a substitute for the building.
His general point about the house runs alongside. A fifth house relationship is not for people trying to operate as a single unit, because the two are together and still individuals, and the staying power needed for a marriage or long term partnership may not be supplied by a purely fifth house relationship. He is careful to add that this is not harmful to a marriage, only that it does not by itself provide the weight.
The house sets the issue. Whether the enjoyment runs freely or catches on something is described by the aspects to Venus, which is a separate question.
