The effects of Venus in the fourth house of a composite chart are felt in the most intimate and inward areas of the relationship. Robert Hand puts the emphasis there before anything else: this is love that operates below the visible surface of the thing.
On the psychological level it gives the two a great concern for beauty in their most personal surroundings, and that in turn shows up in wanting the home, or whatever property is shared, to be as tasteful, beautiful and comfortable as possible.
What This Placement Describes
Venus in a composite chart rules love and the ability to form relationships based on emotion. Hand describes its deepest meaning as the principle that draws two entities together by natural and spontaneous inner forces, and its house position as showing how far the relationship allows both people to express themselves through love and which part of their surroundings they most want to bring into that experience.
The fourth house of a composite chart represents more than the home. Hand is explicit that many relationships have nothing that could be called a home and the house remains important anyway. It is angular, which gives it added significance, and more fundamentally it indicates the basic roots of a relationship, both literally in geographic terms and figuratively in terms of mental and emotional background. It signifies the innermost depths of a relationship, which may be so far within as to be invisible at the surface.
He says the fourth is where you check for underlying compatibility. Do the two have compatible backgrounds in that sense, and are their basic emotional and psychological characteristics compatible. A strong fourth house usually indicates that the two share their innermost lives and probably share their actual place of residence.
How It Tends To Play Out
The concrete form Hand gives this is domestic. He says that even without much money the two will probably succeed in creating an elegant home. The taste is real and it finds a way.
Where there is no shared home, he says the effects of a fourth house Venus will be less evident, but he does not therefore discount the placement. Because this is an angular house, the planet in it has greater importance than it would otherwise have. A fourth house Venus indicates that in this relationship the principles of love and beauty are strong and prominent, but expressed most clearly in the intimate personal lives the two share rather than in the life they share with the outside world.
His overall verdict is plain. He calls it usually an excellent indication for an intimate love relationship. Read against what the fourth house is for, that follows: this is affection lodged in the roots rather than in the display, in the layer where compatibility is either there or is not.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes out of the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a fourth house Venus should also be read through the tenth, and where the two natal Venus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The tenth house is the reality of what a relationship is to the outer world, its status, its uniqueness, and its evolutionary purpose. Hand's reading of Venus there describes a couple who are openly affectionate in company, regarded by others as a loving pair, standing openly before the world without hiding. Read as an axis with the fourth, the pairing is between the love that lives at the roots and the love that is visible as a fact about the relationship in the world. The fourth and tenth are both angular, so both ends of this axis carry weight.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches no explicit warning to Venus in the fourth. Saying so is more honest than inventing one, and what can be drawn comes from the house.
He says afflictions to the fourth house have a negative effect upon the home, if there is one, and upon the deepest levels of compatibility. That is where any strain in this placement would show: not in visible argument but in whether the innermost layers actually fit.
There is also a natural limit built into the reading. Because the expression is inward, a relationship with this placement can be genuinely loving in private and give little of that away outside, which can leave the two with less external recognition than the bond deserves. The home, or whatever stands in for it, ends up carrying a great deal.
The house sets the issue. Whether the affection at the roots runs smoothly or under pressure is described by the aspects to Venus, which is a separate question.
