The tenth house of a composite chart is angular, so the effect of Venus in it is emphasised. Robert Hand opens with that structural point and then states the consequence: the experience of love within this relationship will very strongly affect the lives of both people.
The tenth rules the purposes for which the relationship exists, the nature of its individuality and its role in the larger society. Venus placed there puts love inside the question of what the relationship is for.
What This Placement Describes
Venus in a composite chart rules love and the ability to form relationships based on emotion. Hand describes its deepest meaning as the principle that draws two entities together by natural and spontaneous inner forces, and its house position as showing how far the relationship allows both people to express themselves through love and which part of their surroundings they most want to bring into that experience.
The composite tenth house tells about a relationship's development, its uniqueness, and how that uniqueness is established in the world. Because of this it refers to status and reputation, and it also tells about the direction of the relationship's evolution. Hand notes that career has little relevance to a relationship unless it is a business or professional one, but that the deeper tenth house meaning applies fully.
He describes what a strong tenth house relationship is like. The two will be more than normally concerned with directions, often asking what purpose this serves in their lives, and often the encounter with each other helps them find out exactly what they are doing in this world.
How It Tends To Play Out
Hand gives this placement a psychological effect first. On that level, the relationship will help both people discover what they want to do with their lives. Loving each other should reinforce them and give them greater confidence in themselves.
Partly because of that mutual reinforcement, he says, the two are likely to be very openly affectionate in the company of others. Other people will regard them as a loving couple, or if the relationship is a friendship, as having a very close friendship. He puts it directly: this is a relationship that stands openly before the world and does not hide from the view of others.
He also names a purpose the relationship serves. It will teach both people about the nature of love and how they relate to others on an intimate personal level. The only way you can learn what living with another person means is by doing so, and Hand says that is one of the purposes of this relationship.
On a very different plane, he adds, a tenth house Venus may mean the two have come together for some purpose connected with the arts, entertainment or luxuries, either amateur or professional.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a tenth house Venus should also be read through the fourth, and where the two natal Venus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The fourth house is the basic roots of a relationship, its geographic ground and its mental and emotional background, and Hand calls it the innermost depths, which may be so far within as to be invisible at the surface. His reading of Venus there describes love and beauty expressed in the most intimate personal areas, in the home and in the deepest levels of compatibility. Read as an axis, the tenth is the love that is visible as a fact about the relationship in the world and the fourth is the same love at the roots. Both houses are angular, so both ends carry weight.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
Hand attaches no explicit warning to Venus in the tenth. Saying so is better than manufacturing one, and the honest pressure points come from the house.
Where the relationship's purpose is bound up with love, the question of purpose gets asked of the love. A couple with this placement will keep returning to what the relationship is for, and there is no guarantee that the answer stays the same for both people over time. Hand's own description of a strong tenth house relationship includes the two repeatedly asking what purpose it serves in their lives.
There is also the exposure. A relationship that stands openly before the world is also a relationship the world has opinions about, and the affection is being conducted partly in public.
The house sets the issue. Whether the love reinforces the purpose or strains against it is described by the aspects to Venus, which is a separate question.
