Composite Venus in the Sixth House

Composite venus in the sixth house ties affection to work and usefulness, where love is real but is not the highest priority holding the two of you together.

Psychological

Venus in the sixth house of a composite chart places affection inside the area of work, duty, responsibility and service. Robert Hand says plainly that this is not the easiest place for Venus to express itself, and he explains why rather than leaving it as a verdict.

His central statement about the placement is a correction of the obvious misreading. Venus in the sixth does not indicate a lack of affection between the two people. It means that love is not the highest priority keeping them together.

What This Placement Describes

Venus in a composite chart rules love and the ability to form relationships based on emotion. Hand describes its deepest meaning as the principle that draws two entities together by natural and spontaneous inner forces, and its house position as showing how far the relationship lets both people express themselves through love and which part of their surroundings they most want to bring into the experience.

The composite sixth house refers to the duties and responsibilities the relationship must fulfil. Hand notes that all relationships have obligations and that in most cases these are not harmful. Duties become a problem only when they are the major element, with no room for the self expression ruled by the fifth house. In a business relationship a strong sixth is not a great problem, since there are tasks to be done.

The sixth is to some extent a house of self repression, while Venus is a planet of self expression, and the house does not square easily with Venus's love of beauty, grace, ease and pleasure.

How It Tends To Play Out

Within this relationship, Hand says, the concern for love and affection is kept subordinate to what the two may consider more important or more practical matters. He gives concrete examples. In a marriage this position would tend to make the two stay together for the sake of the children, or to continue some business or work project they have become involved in together.

He then names a second and more interesting outcome. The love between the two may be partly predicated on a feeling that each can do something fairly specific for the other, something the other needs to have done, beyond simply making them feel better. That is a real form of affection and it is worth naming as such: usefulness as a way of loving, care that takes the shape of a task completed.

The Opposite House

Hand's paired house rule follows from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a sixth house Venus should also be read through the twelfth, and where the two natal Venus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.

The twelfth house is repressed thought, the once conscious ideas the mind has chosen not to deal with, and the environmental factors that caused the repression. Hand calls Venus one of the least difficult planets to have there, and his reading of it describes strong feelings of affection that the two may not be demonstrative about, along with an ability to give way to each other and to subordinate personal interest to the interest of the couple. Read as an axis, the sixth is the service that is visible as work and the twelfth is the feeling that goes unspoken. The pair share a common thread, which is affection that does not announce itself.

Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.

Where It Gets Difficult

Hand gives a direct instruction with this placement, and it is the one thing he insists on. No personal relationship can survive for purely utilitarian motives. The lighter, self expressive feelings must be allowed to come out too, if only so that the relationship survives.

That is the failure mode: not that duty is present, but that duty crowds out everything else. His general remark on the house makes the same point. When the sixth house is too strong the two people see the relationship as a duty to be met rather than something to be enjoyed, and in a personal relationship, which is supposed to be a voluntary and natural expression of each person's self, that dutiful attitude can ultimately weaken it.

He also names the condition under which the placement is straightforwardly an advantage. Where the circumstances genuinely call for work to be done, a strong sixth house is useful, and making good use of these energies requires that the two approach even a personal relationship from a strong sense of personal duty.

The house sets the issue. Whether the affection moves easily through the work or gets ground down by it is described by the aspects to Venus, which is a separate question.
