Venus is one of the least difficult planets to have in the twelfth house of a composite chart. Robert Hand says that outright, and then gives the balance: there are problems associated with it, but there are strong points as well.
The first thing it signifies is a gap between feeling and display. The two may have strong feelings of affection for each other and not be demonstrative about them, to the point where other people may not even be aware of how they feel.
What This Placement Describes
Venus in a composite chart rules love and the ability to form relationships based on emotion. Hand describes its deepest meaning as the principle that draws two entities together by natural and spontaneous inner forces, with no external compulsion needed, and its house position as showing how far the relationship allows both people to express themselves through love.
The composite twelfth house, Hand says, represents repressed thoughts. It signifies once conscious ideas that have been eliminated from the waking mind because the mind chose not to deal with them, and it also indicates the environmental factors that caused the repression.
The problem with repressed ideas, in his account, is that they give rise to unconsciously motivated actions that are often harmful to a person or to the relationship. Because those actions are automatic they are often inappropriate to the situation and serve to undo rather than aid the relationship.
He also notes that the twelfth house can signify a secret relationship, and with Venus there he names that possibility directly.
How It Tends To Play Out
With Venus in the twelfth, Hand says, the relationship may be influenced to a considerable degree by unconscious factors in both people. It may be difficult to understand the dynamics of it, and the two may do things for no apparent reason. He refuses to grade this in advance: it can be either good or bad depending on what they do. His recommendation is to try to understand what lies behind the relationship, if only to gain greater control over themselves.
Then he gives what he calls the clearly positive side, and it is substantial. This placement can help both people overcome their ego drives within the relationship. It enables each of them to give way to the other when that is desirable. They are able to think of themselves as a unit and to subordinate their personal interests to their interests as a couple, and Hand says this ability can eliminate many problems that would otherwise arise.
The Opposite House
Hand's paired house rule comes from the mechanics of the composite. Two midpoints exist for any pair of planets, and although the nearer one is used, the farther one keeps some effect, an effect that increases as the two natal positions approach opposition. So a twelfth house Venus should also be read through the sixth, and where the two natal Venus positions are near opposition, reading both is essential rather than optional.
The sixth house is the duties and responsibilities the relationship must fulfil, and Hand calls it to some extent a house of self repression. His reading of Venus there describes affection kept subordinate to more practical matters, and love partly grounded in being able to do something specific for each other. Read as an axis, the sixth is care that takes the visible shape of work and the twelfth is care that goes unspoken. Both ends describe affection that does not announce itself, and both carry the same instruction, which is that the feeling has to be allowed out somewhere.
Hand gives no threshold for when the second reading takes over and no method for blending the two. Both stand.
Where It Gets Difficult
The difficulty Hand names is opacity. When a relationship is influenced heavily by unconscious factors, the two people cannot always account for what they are doing, and the actions they take are not necessarily fitted to what is actually happening between them. His general remark on the house is that a couple in a strongly twelfth house relationship end up dealing with behaviour patterns automatically when they should be making a thorough conscious evaluation of them.
The undemonstrativeness carries its own cost. Affection that is felt strongly and shown rarely can be underestimated by the people inside it as well as by everyone outside.
Hand's overall verdict on twelfth house relationships is worth carrying here, because it is carefully balanced. He says they are among the most difficult of all relationships, that marriage is not normally recommended for a couple with a very strong twelfth, and in the same passage that some people benefit greatly from intense day to day psychological encounters and that these relationships cannot be rejected out of hand. They must be evaluated very carefully.
The house sets the issue. Whether the hidden material surfaces workably is described by the aspects to Venus, which is a separate question.
