Annual profections are a traditional time lord technique that switches on one natal house per year of life. First house from birth to your first birthday, second house from one to two, and onward. Then the cycle repeats every twelve years.
That last part is the bit worth stopping on. The loop is twelve, so your thirtieth year runs the same house as your eighteenth, and your sixth. Same house, same ruling planet, completely different person arriving at it. If you want a technique that tells you which years rhyme, this is the one.
At each birthday the next house becomes the profected house, and the planet ruling that house's sign becomes the lord of the year. That planet is on duty until your next birthday, and it is the single most useful output the technique produces.

Use completed age. Somebody who turns 30 enters a seventh house profection year on that birthday, not on the one before it.
How To Find The Lord Of The Year
Whole sign houses, traditional rulers. Both of those matter.
- Find the rising sign.
- Count forward one sign per year to the profected house.
- Identify the sign occupying that house.
- Use its traditional ruler as the lord of the year.
Worked example, Virgo rising at age 30.
- Age 30 activates the seventh house.
- Pisces is the seventh whole sign house from Virgo.
- Jupiter traditionally rules Pisces.
- Jupiter is lord of the year.
Now go and look at natal Jupiter properly: sign, house, aspects, condition. Then find Jupiter in the solar return chart, and watch transits to Jupiter and by Jupiter across the year. You have just turned one planet into the year's main character.
What Does The Profected House Mean
The active house hands you a topic category. It does not hand you an event.
- First house years can emphasise body, identity and personal direction.
- Fourth house years can emphasise home, parents, property and foundations.
- Seventh house years can emphasise partners, clients, contracts or opponents.
- Tenth house years can emphasise career, reputation and public action.
- Twelfth house years can emphasise withdrawal, institutions, hidden difficulty, or work behind the scenes.
Planets sitting in the profected sign get activated too, and their natal topics can join the year uninvited.
The Natal Condition Of The Lord Matters
The lord of the year is carrying the profected house's business for twelve months. Its natal condition tells you what resources and what difficulties it is carrying that business with.
Ask:
- Is it in a sign it rules or one where it struggles?
- Is it angular or hidden?
- Is it supported by benefics or pressured by malefics?
- Which houses does it rule?
- Is it in sect?
Demetra George's framework for planetary condition is the useful reference here. The key principle: activation does not turn a planet into a different planet. It gives its existing natal responsibilities more emphasis than they had last year.
How Profections Work With Solar Returns And Transits
Profections get specific when you stack them.
Charles Obert and Chris Brennan both describe giving particular attention to:
- The lord of the year in the solar return;
- Transits made by the lord of the year;
- Transits to the natal lord of the year;
- Planets in the profected sign;
- Transits through the profected sign;
- Repetitions between the natal chart and the annual chart.
So if a seventh house year activates Jupiter, and the solar return puts Jupiter on the Midheaven, and transiting Saturn squares natal Jupiter, then partnership, contracts and public responsibility are all plausibly linked for that year. What actually happens still depends on the life the chart belongs to.
Common Mistakes
Treating The House As An Event
A seventh house year does not mean marriage. It can describe divorce, clients, litigation, collaboration, or simply a year defined by consequential encounters with other people. The house is a subject heading.
Using Modern Rulers Without Checking The Technique
Profections were built with the seven traditional rulers. Use Mars for Scorpio, Jupiter for Pisces, Saturn for Aquarius when you are assigning the time lord. Outer planets can still come in as transiting factors, they just do not hold the office.
Ignoring The Birthday Boundary
The profection changes on your solar return, which is to say your birthday. Not on January 1, no matter how much the calendar would prefer it.
Reading The Lord Without Its Natal Houses
Your lord of the year probably rules two houses. Both sets of topics can be activated, not only the profected one.
What To Actually Go Do
Find your completed age, read it off the table, and write down the profected house. Then get your rising sign, count that many signs forward, and name the traditional ruler of the sign that lands there. That planet is your lord of the year and it took you ninety seconds.
Now do the part that makes it worth something. Look at where that planet sits natally and which other houses it rules, and write down three topics you would expect to be live this year. Then go back to the age table and find the last time you ran this same house, eleven or twelve years ago. Ask what was happening then. Not because it repeats, but because the same department of your life was open for business and you may recognise the shape of it.
