Here is the finding, up front, because it is the most useful thing on this page and burying it would be rude.
We went through the synastry library looking for doctrine on matching the modes between two people, and there is none. Not a scarce amount. None. Arroyo builds his entire chart comparison method on the elements and never once extends it to the modes.
Which means every article telling you that two fixed signs will deadlock, or that cardinal and mutable are a natural fit, is somebody's inference wearing inherited knowledge as a costume.
We have an inference too. Ours is clearly labelled as ours, further down. First, the part that does have doctrine behind it.
What The Modes Actually Measure
Two corrections before anything else, because most writing on this topic gets both wrong.
The modes are not personality traits. Fixed does not mean stubborn. Mutable does not mean flaky. Cardinal does not mean bossy. Every one of those readings smuggles a character judgement into something that was never describing character.
Arroyo's definition is the clearest available, and it is about direction of energy.

Read as functions rather than traits, these are three jobs every relationship needs done. Something has to get started. Something has to be held steady once it exists. Something has to adapt when the circumstances change, which they will.
Now notice what is not on that list. None of the three modes measures conviction. A cardinal person can take a firm stand and hold it for forty years. A mutable person can have unshakeable principles. The mode describes which direction the energy travels, not how hard it is held.
Conviction in a chart belongs to Saturn, to the Sun, and to the chart ruler, and it is read separately from all of this. If somebody has told you that your chart says you cannot take a stand because you are not fixed, that was a misreading of what the mode is for.
The Honest Part: There Is No Doctrine Here
This is worth being straight about, because you will not find it stated elsewhere.
We searched the synastry library for rules about mode matching between two people. Arroyo, whose whole comparison method runs on the elements, never extends it to the modes. They appear in his work only as definitions of the twelve signs, never in a two chart context. March and McEvers return nothing. Neither do Greene, Meyer or Spiller. Burk's only mention concerns natal squares. Skymates uses the phrase "cardinal rule" and calls someone "fixed in his opinions," and that is the entire haul.
So when an article tells you two fixed signs will deadlock, that claim is not coming from the tradition. It is an inference presented as something older than it is.
We would rather label ours.
What Follows From The Definitions, Marked As Ours
Everything in this section is our reading, not inherited doctrine. It is built from Arroyo's definitions of the modes, which are his, applied to two charts, which he never did.
If the modes are three functions rather than three personalities, the interesting question stops being which mode pairs with which. It becomes whether the two charts together cover all three functions.
A pair concentrated in one mode has one function in abundance and two unsupplied. A pair covering all three between them has every gear available, whether or not either person is balanced alone.
That reframing does more work than the pairwise version, and it explains the situations people actually write in about.
Both Charts Dominant In Cardinal
Plainly: Between you, plenty gets started. Considerably less gets finished, and nothing much gets adjusted once it is in motion.
Astrologically: Two charts weighted toward outward directed energy in a definite direction. The initiating function is doubled and the holding and adapting functions are unsupplied. This tends to show up as a relationship with a lot of new plans and a quiet accumulation of unfinished ones.
Both Charts Dominant In Fixed
Plainly: What you build together will last. What needs to change will take a long time to change, and it will not change because one of you argued for it.
Astrologically: The holding function is doubled. Nothing internal to the pair generates adaptation, so change tends to arrive from outside, and to arrive as a crisis rather than as a gradual adjustment. This is the pairing most likely to have durability and least likely to have course correction.
Both Charts Dominant In Mutable
Plainly: You will adapt to each other endlessly and comfortably. Deciding something and staying decided is the part that will take deliberate effort.
Astrologically: The adapting function is doubled and both initiating and holding are unsupplied. Arroyo's spiral image is exact here, constant movement without a fixed centre. Mutable pairs can carry a difficult situation for years without confronting it, because adapting to it is always available and always easier.
A Mixed Pair
If between you the two charts cover cardinal, fixed and mutable, the toolkit is complete. It will not feel harmonious, and there is a reason for that. The person supplying the function you lack is by definition the person doing the thing you would not have done.
The cardinal partner starting something is the fixed partner's disruption. The fixed partner holding is the mutable partner's rigidity. That friction is the functions working, not the relationship failing.
Where The Modes Came From
The three modes, also called modalities or qualities, are one half of the structure that generates the twelve signs. Each sign is one element crossed with one mode, and those two facts fully determine it. Aries is fire in cardinal mode. Taurus is earth in fixed mode. That is the whole system, which is why the signs come in a repeating four by three grid.
The division is ancient and present in the Hellenistic material, where the modes are usually called movable, fixed and common, and are tied to the seasons. Cardinal signs begin each season, fixed signs sit in the middle of one, mutable signs sit at the changeover. Hold on to the seasonal image, because it makes the functions obvious. Something starts, something is at its full extent, something is turning into the next thing.
What To Actually Go Do
Count the modes in both charts, the same way you count the elements. Sun through Saturn plus the Ascendant and Midheaven. Leave the outer planets out, because they sit in a sign for years and describe a generation rather than a temperament.
Then ask two questions, in this order.
- Is either chart missing a mode entirely? An absent mode is a missing gear rather than a missing quality. The thing that mode does still has to happen, so it gets supplied deliberately, or borrowed from somebody who has it.
- Do the two charts together cover all three? If yes, the pair has access to every function. If no, name which function is unsupplied and treat it as something the relationship will have to arrange for rather than something that will happen on its own.
Then put the answer where it belongs, which is late. Mode analysis comes after the individual charts, after the close contacts between them, and after the house overlays. It explains texture. It does not decide anything, and it is not doctrine, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Being Fixed Mean I Am Stubborn?
No. Fixed describes energy gathering toward a centre and staying in the present. That produces persistence, which is not the same thing, and it says nothing about whether you can change your mind. Stubbornness in a chart is read from Saturn and from specific hard aspects, not from a mode count.
Is Cardinal And Cardinal A Bad Match?
The tradition does not say, because the tradition does not address it. On our reading it is not bad, it is incomplete: the pair is strong at starting and unsupplied at holding and adapting. That is a known gap you can plan around, which is more useful than a verdict.
Which Mode Is Most Compatible With Which?
Nobody has established that, and anyone who tells you otherwise is repeating an inference. The question we think is answerable is whether all three functions are covered between the two charts.
Do I Use The Sun Sign's Mode?
Only as a starting point. Count the whole chart. A Gemini Sun with four points in fixed signs is not running mutable, and reading them as mutable will be wrong about the exact thing you most want to know.
