The Saturn Return gets all the press. It is not the beginning of anything.

The Saturn cycle is a roughly 29.5 year sequence with a square about every seven years, an opposition near the halfway point, and a return at completion. Astrologers read those quarter cycle contacts as recurring periods of testing, definition, accountability and structural change.

Which means the cycle has already run three checkpoints on you before the famous one. Around ages 7, 14 and 21, transiting Saturn reaches the first square, the opposition and the second square to natal Saturn. The Saturn Return at 29 is the fourth stop, not the first, and the same phases keep repeating for the rest of your life.

Broad estimates, not appointment dates. Saturn's exact longitude, apparent speed, retrogrades, your chosen orb and your natal degree are what determine the real timing.

Why Saturn's Cycle Has Four Main Phases

The cycle is measured from transiting Saturn to natal Saturn:

Conjunction or return (0°): one cycle closes and another begins.
Waxing square (90°): the new cycle meets its first structural test.
Opposition (180°): maximum separation, visibility and confrontation.
Waning square (270°): results get evaluated and edited before the next return.

Use waxing and waning rather than "first" and "second" square, because "second Saturn square" can mean the waning square around 21 or the next waxing square around 36 depending entirely on who is talking. Two different decades, same phrase. Worth avoiding.

First Saturn Square: Approximately Ages 6 To 8

The first waxing square usually lands alongside increased school expectations, comparison with peers, rules coming from outside the family, and a dawning awareness of competence. Clare Martin describes it as a turning point in a child's relationship with external demands.

Astrologically it is the first real test of the natal Saturn pattern. A child may become more aware of ability, frustration, authority, exclusion, or the sheer amount of effort a skill requires.

This transit does not determine school success and it does not mean a difficult childhood was meant to happen. Family conditions, disability, education, culture and material support all matter enormously, and a transit does not outrank any of them.

First Saturn Opposition: Approximately Ages 14 To 15

At the opposition Saturn is halfway through its first orbit. Adolescence tends to make the tension between dependence and autonomy extremely visible, and it does not do so gently: changing bodies, peer judgment, academic expectations, rules, and a growing appetite for freedom all arrive at once.

The astrological task is differentiation. Which standards deserve respect? Which authorities need questioning? What responsibility can this person start to own rather than either obey or resist?

First Waning Saturn Square: Approximately Ages 21 To 22

Casually called the "second Saturn square," which is exactly the ambiguity worth avoiding. It usually falls near the move from education or training into livelihood, independent housing, partnership, or other adult obligations.

Astrologers read it as a reality test. The structure inherited from family and institutions now has to function in adult circumstances. Extending education, changing direction, entering work, or discovering that independence is financially more complicated than advertised are all plausible expressions.

First Saturn Return: Approximately Ages 27 To 30

The first return completes Saturn's first orbit. Earlier choices and adaptations are now part of the evidence. Commitments may get made, revised or ended as a more self authored structure takes shape.

Saturn Square After The First Return: Approximately Ages 36 To 38

The waxing square of the second cycle tests whatever was established around the first return. A career, relationship, family arrangement, business, financial plan or identity now has enough history behind it to evaluate honestly.

The question is practical: does this structure work outside the hope that created it? Adjustment here is not failure. Adjustment is what a quarter cycle checkpoint is for.

Saturn Opposition After The First Return: Approximately Ages 44 To 45

This opposition brings the second cycle to its midpoint. Results may show up in work, partnership, caregiving, health routines, public responsibility, and the hard limits of available time.

It often overlaps the broader midlife period and can fall near the Uranus opposition and Neptune square. Those cycles have their own exact dates. Calculate them separately rather than blending every midlife development into one convenient transit.

Saturn Square Before The Second Return: Approximately Ages 51 To 53

The waning square asks what needs completing, simplifying or reorganising before the next cycle starts. Roles built around achievement, parenting, caregiving, status or security may need to change as circumstances and capacities move.

This is not automatically a period of loss. It can be a highly productive editing phase where experience makes you considerably more selective, which is a perfectly good use of a decade.

Second Saturn Return: Approximately Ages 56 To 60

The second return reviews the structures built across adulthood. Work, authority, health, family responsibility, retirement, mortality and legacy can all become prominent, and no single one of those is universal.

The Third Saturn Cycle And Third Return

The same quarter cycle pattern carries on around ages 66, 74 and 81, arriving at a third return around 86 to 90. Later cycles may emphasise stewardship, physical limits, dependence and independence, wisdom, completion, inheritance, and what outlasts the person.

Do not reduce older adulthood to decline. The chart may equally be describing serious new work, leadership, creative production, family change, or a deliberate and welcome simplification of life.

Find natal Saturn's exact zodiacal longitude.
Calculate transiting Saturn's exact 90°, 180°, 270° and 360° contacts.
Record every direct and retrograde pass.
Choose and disclose the orb used for the wider period.
Read natal Saturn's sign, house, aspects and ruled houses.
Identify the houses occupied by transiting Saturn at each contact.

What To Actually Go Do

Work out which phase you are currently in, using the table, then get the actual dates from natal Saturn's longitude rather than trusting the age band.

Then do the thing this article exists for. Go back through your own quarter cycle dates, 7, 14, 21, 29, 36, 44 and so on, as far as your life goes, and write one line about each. Not a story. One line about what was being decided or tested.

Read the list. If Saturn's cycle is doing anything in your chart, the same department of life should keep showing up at the checkpoints, in progressively more consequential forms. Natal Saturn's house and the houses it rules will tell you which department to expect.
