Here is the part that surprises people. It is not your birthday chart cast at your birth time. The Sun does not care what the calendar says. - Mars angular may increase action, conflict, severing or urgency.

4. Read The Sun's House
The Sun always returns to its natal degree, but the house it lands in changes every year. That house shows where visibility, purpose, authority or central effort is gathering.
5. Read The Moon
The return Moon's sign, house, phase and aspects describe shifting needs, body rhythms, family or domestic emphasis, and the general emotional weather of the year.
6. Identify Repeated Houses And Rulers
Look for the same topic showing up through the Ascendant ruler, the Sun, the Moon, the angular planets and the house rulers. Repetition is the signal. One isolated placement is a detail.
7. Compare The Return With The Natal Chart
Overlay the return on the natal chart. Note return planets contacting natal planets or angles, and any house getting emphasis in both charts at once.
Combine Solar Returns With Annual Profections
Traditional predictive practice usually runs profections first to identify the lord of the year, then goes hunting for that planet in the solar return.

If the tenth house is profected, its ruler is angular in the solar return, and transits are also contacting the natal Midheaven, then career and public action have a genuinely stacked case. That is a stronger reading than any one of those factors alone.

It is much better at describing the year's emphasis than at naming dates. Transits, lunar returns, profections, directions or progressions are what narrow the timing. If you want to know whether your solar return reading is any good, define the expected topics and windows before the year happens, which is harder and considerably more honest.

Generate this year's solar return and check the date first. If it is not your birthday, that is normal and you should stop being suspicious of your software.
Write down four things: the return Ascendant and its ruler, the house the Sun landed in, any planet within a few degrees of an angle, and the Moon's house. Then look for the overlap. If the Ascendant ruler is in the sixth, the Sun is in the sixth, and Saturn is sitting on the Descendant, you do not need an interpretation service, you need to think honestly about work and health and who you have agreed to be available to.
Then pull your annual profection for the same year and find the lord of the year in this chart. If it is angular, underline it. That is your year's headline and everything else is supporting copy.
