Two benefics, two malefics, Mercury abstaining. Everybody knows this part. Jupiter and Venus good, Saturn and Mars bad, thank you and goodnight.
Then you read the next paragraph of the doctrine and discover that the labels were never the ranking. The labels sort the planets into natures. Sect sorts them into an order, and the order inverts depending on whether the Sun was up when you were born.
Which produces the result the modern version of this never tells you: in half of all charts, one of your two malefics is better behaved than one of your two benefics.
Chris Brennan puts the point directly: sect is the primary criterion the Hellenistic astrologers used to decide where each planet falls on the benefic and malefic spectrum in a given chart, which is why benefics are not always fully positive and malefics not always entirely negative.
The Two Teams First
The seven traditional planets divide into a diurnal team led by the Sun and a nocturnal team led by the Moon, and the four planets in question split one benefic and one malefic to each side.

A planet in a chart that matches its own team is of the sect and the texts say it rejoices. A planet in the opposite kind of chart is contrary to the sect. What that condition does splits four ways.

Put those four conditions together and you get a spectrum that inverts with the chart.

Stated as one rule: the most positive planet is Jupiter by day and Venus by night, and the most difficult is Mars by day and Saturn by night. Brennan notes that mitigating factors can alter this, but that for the most part the rule holds despite other factors.
Now look at the middle tier, because that is where the doctrine does something genuinely odd. In each chart, one benefic and one malefic sit together in the moderate band. A Venus contrary to sect and a Saturn of the sect end up describing roughly comparable amounts of usable good in a day chart. If you were raised on the idea that benefics help and malefics harm, that result should be doing something to you right now.
The principle underneath the whole arrangement is this: planets belonging to the sect of the chart tend to work in favour of the native, and planets contrary to the sect tend to work against the native's interests. Team membership decides the direction. The benefic and malefic labels only decide the size of the effect.
Why The Fixed Labels Mislead
The words benefic and malefic describe a planet's inherent tendency. They do not describe its behaviour in a specific chart, because behaviour is what sect governs.
This is why "Jupiter is the greater benefic" is only half true. Jupiter has the larger benefic nature of the two, and in a night chart Jupiter is the second best planet in the chart rather than the first. Venus, the so called lesser benefic, takes the top position in every nocturnal chart there is. The comparative titles rank the natures. Sect ranks the performances, and the performance is what a reading is about.
The same applies in the other direction. Saturn has the heavier malefic nature, and in a day chart Saturn is not the planet you should be worried about. Mars is.
The Out Of Sect Malefic, Which Everybody Has
The hardest single position in the scheme is a malefic contrary to the sect. Mars in a day chart. Saturn in a night chart. One of these exists in every chart ever cast, without exception, because the two malefics belong to opposite teams.
That is worth sitting with for a moment. The doctrine does not say some charts have a difficult placement and others do not. It says every chart has exactly one planet at the far end of the spectrum, and the whole question is which one and where it sits. There is no version of this where you got lucky and there is no version where you got singled out.
What the out of sect malefic actually describes is a planet whose method does not match the tempo of the chart it is in. Mars by day tends toward force applied faster than the situation warranted, in the house it occupies and the houses it rules. Saturn by night tends toward delay and cost arriving before the reward does, in its own house and the houses it rules.
Neither of these is a curse and neither is a life sentence. They are descriptions of a recurring difficulty with a specific address, and the address is the useful part. A chart tells you which territory needs deliberate handling. It does not tell you the territory is closed.
Several things modify how heavily it lands. The malefic's own essential dignity matters, since a malefic in its own domicile or exaltation is operating with resources. Aspects from the benefics matter. The condition of its domicile lord matters, because a planet in poor condition whose lord is well placed has somewhere to appeal to, which is the doctrine of reception. None of these erase the sect condition. They tell you how much room the native has to work with inside it.
The one thing that does not modify it is wishing. Traditional astrology is direct about difficulty, and the honesty is the point of using it.
What Sect Does Not Do
Sect is a qualitative factor, not a quantitative one. It alters the benefic or malefic character of a planet. It does not alter how strong, loud or prominent that planet is in the chart.
This distinction gets collapsed constantly and it produces bad readings in both directions. A Jupiter of the sect that is peregrine, cadent and unaspected is a well disposed planet with very little to say. A Saturn contrary to sect sitting on the Midheaven in its own domicile is a difficult planet with an enormous amount to say, and it will be heard.
For how loud a planet is, you are asking about dignity, angularity and rulership. For what a planet does with the volume it has, you are asking about sect. Both questions are worth asking and they are not the same question.
There is also no stated rule in the ancient material for how to weigh sect against dignity. Nothing in the tradition tells you what to conclude when a planet is of the sect and in its fall, or contrary to the sect and in its own domicile. Any rule for combining them is a modern construction, and it should be labelled as one.
Mercury, Which The Tradition Never Sorted
Mercury does not appear in the benefic and malefic ranking, and its sect assignment is genuinely unresolved. Ptolemy and Porphyry make it diurnal as a morning star and nocturnal as an evening star. Valens makes its sect depend on the ruler of the bounds it occupies. The Michigan Papyrus has Mercury simply take the sect of the chart. Rhetorius calls it neutral.
Brennan does not resolve them, and observes practically that Mercury's sect condition does not seem to make a major difference, since sect functions primarily as a modifier for the benefics and malefics.
What To Actually Go Do
Work out whether your chart is day or night, then build your own four tier list from the table above. Write the four planets down in order, top to bottom.
Now go and find the one in the middle tier that you have been treating as a problem. In a day chart that is Saturn. In a night chart that is Mars. Look at the house it sits in and the houses it rules, and ask what that part of your life actually looks like when it goes well, because the doctrine says it goes well more often than you have been giving it credit for.
Then find the planet at the bottom of your list and give it an address rather than an adjective. Which house, which topics, what specifically tends to go wrong there, and what would a longer runway or a slower hand actually change. That is the whole practical content of the out of sect malefic and it is a to do list rather than a diagnosis.
